Breakfast Meeting with Dato Dr K Govindan on February 4th, 2010

Talk: MALAYSIAN ECONOMY : Recovery and Beyond

Don't miss this exclusive opportunity to listen to YBhg Dato’ Dr K Govindan from the Prime Minister Department.

We just received the exact synopsis he will have in his talk.

Malaysia is at a critical crossroads in its history. The economic model which has served well over the last thirty years in transforming the country into a middle income economy needs an urgent overhaul. A new economic model is now required for Malaysia to achieve its goal of attaining the status of high income economy by 2020. Malaysia finds itself increasingly unable to compete with low income, low wage countries in manufacturing exports and unable to match the advanced economies in high skilled innovation.

The transformation process will be a steep challenge. Very few countries in the region have succeeded in making this transition from middle income to high income status. To add to the complexity, Malaysia will not only have to reckon with an uncertain global economic environment but also intense pressure from not just the more developed economies like South Korea and Taiwan but also the rapidly developing economies like China, India and even Indonesia that are closing the income gap at a furious pace.

The talk will focus on the various reform packages currently being considered by the Government for moving the nation to high income status by the end of this decade. The talk is also intended to provoke discussion on what can be done to set the rules of the game right especially in creating an environment in which the private sector can flourish. This will invariably cover a number of key issues ranging from openness and competition, reorientation of markets and sources of foreign investment, education and skills development, role of Government and labour market policies.

Dato Govindan will stress on the;

-         the impact of the global economic slowdown on Malaysia?
-         how the new economic model will be a strategy package?

 He will further discuss other recent updates with You!
